The first of the Hashimoto brothers settles in the Sawtelle area around 1928, which was then a burgeoning Japanese community. Realizing an opportunity, he summons 3 of his brothers to join him and together they open the O.K. Nursery in the location which will eventually become Hashimoto Nursery years later.
Before the United States enters World War II, the 4 brothers split up and send 2 of them home to Japan. The other 2 run the business until they are relocated to Manzanar Internment Camp for the duration of the War. Upon their release, they return to Sawtelle Boulevard and re-open the nursery, changing the name to Hashimoto Brothers Nursery.
In 1961 the 4 brothers reunite to run the business again. 2 brothers will eventually leave to open their own nurseries in the San Fernando Valley and the city of Hemet. The nursery in West Los Angeles is the only one still in operation today.
80 years and 3 generations later, Hashimoto Nursery is still family owned and operated, providing quality plants and friendly service to the Westside.
